About the Young Nats
The Young Nationals has developed over the last thirty years to ensure younger Australians between the ages of 16 and 35 are given every opportunity to increase their understanding of and contribution to Australian politics.
The Young Nationals allows younger people to have their issues and opinions heard by the senior party.
The Nationals basic philosophy is conservative, in that it supports maximum development of private enterprise. It believes Australians should be able to manage their own affairs in a prospering private sector-lead economy, enhanced by appropriate Government policies. The role of Government should be kept to the minimum and be as cost-efficient as possible. Its prime objectives should be:
- to ensure maximum freedom of choice and opportunity for all Citizens;
- to have an economic framework that provides reward for individual effort;
- to foster preservation of the family as the foundation of society;
- to preserve freedom of speech, communication, worship and assembly for all Australians;
- to offer maximum encouragement for the pursuit of excellence in all endeavours;
- to maintain loyalty to the Crown and the existing Australian National Flag;
- to engender pride in the Nation;
- to preserve democracy through free elections for Governments at Federal, State and Local levels.
The Nationals Objective: Government!
The objective of The Nationals (including the Young Nationals) at Federal and State levels is to win as many seats as possible in the Parliaments of Australia to implement or advance Party policy and philosophy. The Party policy and philosophy is developed by members directly from the local Branch level upwards.
How to Get your Ideas to the Government
There are many Young Nationals members throughout Australia. Many are also members of their local branch of The Nationals. Young Nationals are entitled to representation on the governing Council of the senior Party in each State.
The NSW Young Nationals contribute to the policy development of the party by putting forward motions at The Nationals Annual State Conference, many of which are passed. Naturally, Young Nationals have the opportunity to attend and participate in Party Conferences.
Alternatively, the Young Nationals submit ideas directly to Parliament and/or National Party Parliamentarians or the media and Party newsletters. Our Parliamentarians - many of whom are former Young Nationals themselves - are always very receptive to our representations and ideas, particularly where the issues relate to younger people.
The Young Nationals form a very important link in the democratic chain between Parliament and the community. The Young Nationals also form the Young Nationals at the Federal level. This is made up of an elected President and delegates from each affiliated State. The President is automatically a delegate on the Federal Management Committee and the Young Nationals are represented on Federal Council and Federal Conference.
Clearly, there is the opportunity for the Young Nationals to participate in and influence policy development at the highest levels of the Federal and State National Parties.
